In the last three days downtown Manhattan transfor

In the last three days downtown Manhattan transformed into a surreal version of itself that, to me, represents the very worst of humanity. The assault perpetrated against the city feels intensely personal. Yes, in most cases, insurance will cover the damage. But what about the psychological assault to small business owners whose livelihoods were stolen? Gucci, Apple, YSL, LV, Chanel, Hermes, (all were vandalized overnight) have enough cash to rebuild without blinking. But what about the small independent shops, cafes and restaurants that are struggling to stay afloat? How will they cover the costs of cleanup and repairs in the months it takes for that insurance check to arrive?

Today I walked the streets of SoHo, TriBeCa, and NYU to see for myself the damage done overnight by looters. Criminals used peaceful protests for people's civil rights to smash windows, damage property and steal. I photographed the boarded up blocks and intersections as crews of construction workers tirelessly fixed, cleaned and covered up the shattered windows all over the city.

I spoke to several owners holding sheets of ply board on the sidewalks and you know where they were the day before? Attending the protests in Washington Square Park. Demanding justice. Only to be faced with piles of broken glass, smashed tile walls, stolen inventory the next morning.... Why? "Just because". This thuggery is an opportunistic cancer that hacks peaceful processions and sullies the optics of the fight for justice that unites people across the world. They don't care about justice. They don't care about rights. They don't care about destruction. This is not protesting. This is vandalism.

I hope the day when my city sheds its ugly boards and breathes again comes soon because seeing it like this is unbearable. My deepest gratitude to the workers who are doing what they can to wash away the graffiti, the urine, burnt trash, and clean the streets.
